Alt+End will also move to and read the last message, and then alt+Left/Right will move through them and remember your place, all without changing focus out of the edit box or wherever it is.
I confess I don't understand your comment about out-of-context message reading with arrows. If Ctrl+5 does not focus the message list properly, type it twice. I sometimes have to do that too. But maybe the Alt+End/Left/Right will be of more use to you anyway.
