Don't worry about it. The rule is actually I think in the welcome email everyone receives.
The reason is I like to keep things on topic for the publicly available archive and I don't want those of us who search to be cluttered with happy holiday messages every time a us, British, Russian, etc holiday comes up. The list will then be a mess. Oh you can have happy holidays in your sig, but not as a general message to this list.
