Hmm, with only two layers that's going to be pretty limited, just a HUD layer and the world view with some depth separation. Even with more layers you're still stuck with a small set of discreet planes with a fixed offset from each other, a bit like flat stage scenery. It also won't be able to occlude properly, you can't have something light coloured in front of something dark.

Unless someone takes a massive leap forward in LCD optical transmission efficiency it's going to need some sort of insane nuclear powered backlighting assembly, as LCDs already have horrible optical efficiency, typically around 5%. (I used to work in the design of LCD backlighting systems :)

It will probably find some use in arcade machines with a clearly defined foreground and background scene. Or it could make for some interesting user interfaces by popping stuff that needs attention forward out of the background, for safety or time critical stuff in industrial / medical applications.
