That was my plan, but I had hoped to be able to run the branch as
is to verify that my patch was correct.
My reading of the original notice on this security update was that
even viewers that specified -channel would not work. Is that correct?

The puppeteering branch is frozen. There was an announcement that it
would be unsupported when it dropped, which we should probably put
somewhere prominent in that source tree.
I would suggest doing a diff against the base and newer revision and
applying that to a live branch if you want to use it as a production
viewer. There are likely other security updates that never made that
branch.
