In Cocoon we ship Jetty for this purpose. It's 550 KB (instead of a good
7,5MB for Tomcat). It starts up twice as fast and has a small memory
footprint compared to tomcat. For Cocoon it has proven perfect for both
developers and users. I think Stefano mentioned he already had something
like this running and willing to contribute...

The current integration with Tomcat means there is a Slide Catalina
Realm that enables Tomcat to authenticate against Slide managed users.
