This is true - but it is a really great feature. There is no other way the 
client applications can get instantly informed when other users are working 
on the same repository.
As events in general this is of course an optional feature but it allows a lot 
of good this. Think of a web application running on top of slide. Slide is 
far too slow to deliver content in "realtime", so there is no other way than 
providing a clustered rendering layer that gets informed when content 
changes. 
If you want to open slide to web frameworks that are not java based, this 
webdav methods are the best solution.
