You are right. Having GPL in the Slide context would be a big drawnback, for
if any part of the SW is GPL, then the complete package MUST be GPL. This
would force anyone using Slide to distribute their products as GPL. This is
in very contrast to the Apache license, which allows an embedding, with
vendor specific license texts.



I would strongly argue, NOT to use any GPL parts in Apache/Slide.

There are a few licensing issues with using JavaCVS here, since JavaCVS is
GPL.
If you decide to use JavaCVS, then the store will have to be LGPL licensed.

(I'm not a license expert, though, so I could be wrong)
