I like slide. If I were making a decision for a new implementation of a
product now it would go something like this:
1. If WebDAV support is of primary importance, go with Slide.
JackRabbit has WebDAV but it is not as complete as Slide's.
2. If WebDAV support is secondary, take your pick.
3. Is a language API other than Java required? Go with Slide,
JackRabbit is Java only.
4. Does your application needs to work with multiple different
repositories? WebDAV is a proven solution, JackRabbit is where the Java
is supposed to be heading (Travel time may vary).
5. Support and future development is the big question. JackRabbit is
new and growing, Slide is stagnant right now. If Slide doesn't get an
active maintainer soon it is going to be in trouble (my opinion only).
That said, there is still a very active Slide community. Lots of
improvements have been made and bug fixes contributed. A group of
maintainers, who could actively apply and release the contributed
patches would rapidly have Slide back in a healthy state.

I wouldn't make it so black and white, new=jack rabbit, slide=only if
you already slide.
Slide has many architectural features that are still valuable. For
example we use custom stores to allow for varying storage for any given
path to RDBMS, File System and even external integrations such as
SalesForce.com.
Jack Rabbit may be more standard and have a better/easier to use API,
but is still far short of what you can do with Slide IMHO.

Thank for your answer Ray,
Is there anyone working with a new release in mind though? I read that
the project stagnated after developers left due to the complexity of the
code (just what I read), is there a trend now towards revitalization? I
didn't get that impression from the mailing list but that's just my
guess.
Jackrabbit sound great except that there is no release yet, but I would
say that as a rule of thumb: Jackrabbit for new projects, Slide only if
there is previous investment in it. What do you think?
