I haven't built my own kernel in a while, so I am not sure this is still
valid.
The last step I issued was make install, just like any other build from
source.
The make install, copied the new kernel and the System.map to /boot and
ran lilo to update the image.
This way you can be sure that nothing is missed :)
Just make sure that your lilo.conf points to vmlinuz and not
vmlinuz.x.x.x-xx
