You are intending to do this for security reasons?
I wouldn't do this for security. The better option is to go with SSH (Secure
SHell). It uses encypted communication.
It is easy to set up and you have control over which IP addresses can
connect to the SSH server. You would totally disable the telnet server.
You would also want to look at good firewalling rules to be really secure.

The default port for telnet is 23. But I am thinking of changing the port
