Hi all.
I have been speaking with a number of Linux centric companies that like the
idea of Open Source projects being sourced, selected and funded here in
Australia. By funding I mean more $ for equipment and other items not
necessarily payment for time (although a successful end-of-project bonus has
not been ruled out).
I am looking at a structure where innovative and even some of the more
mundane s/w applications & tools people require can be developed. both for
our local community and the wider Linux community.
I am looking to see:
A> if this idea is supported by you (the SLUG community) and of course the
wider Linux community within Australia.
B> Is such a venture necessary, or are we just piss'n-in-the-wind and we
should leave individuals to do there own thing or alternatively funnel any
funding dollars to more international bodies e.g. Linux International or
ear mark funds to specific established project groups like SAMBA in Canberra.
C> Has anyone a good structure that we can model our proposal on. I
personally would any such model to fold into the Linux International
methodology so that in the future SLUG could hand to LI in Australia the
oversee functions.
D> Is anyone with software skills interested in volunteering for
positions as members of the project oversee group.
The group would have general responsibilities for:
* reviewing new project submissions,
* independently assess project milestones,
* reviewing project timetables and success trends,
* and reporting back to the SLUG office holders.
Nothing is set in concrete its just a forward view of what may be
required.
