i think some level of organisation is far more constructive than a
bunch of individuals doing more or less their own thing

I would prefer to see such funding directed to Australian groups
rather than international ones. I think developement of such projects
(eg. SAMBA) in Australia is very important (despite the efforts of
our federal govt).

yes, I think it's probably about time I put my money (time) where my
mouth (fingers/keyboard) is and get involved in something like this.

sounds like a good idea, and especially if you've got companies willing
to fund such developement it would be a shame for that opportunity to
be lost.
At this stage are you sort of collecting expressions of interest then?
If so, put me down as interested.
