I think it's worth it. I think there's also people out there that'll abuse it or waste some of the funds on crap. I think some sort of demand vs skills matching needs to happen. To establish credibility software authors should have already contributed to open source programs in some way, ie listed in the credits. Or, maybe some sort of Open Source Trust so that people can pay for the software they want in advance but the programmers get a proportion according to agreed milestones. If the project fails, funds can be re-diverted to another project the donor nominates. They cannot get a refund. I think this is an excellent opportunity for student programmers to sink their teeth into a project and get valuable experience.
