I'm not really shocked but certainly disappointed.
Rachel has waxed lyrical on the subject of the dangers for the future of
this country if unis churn out M$ "rote learners" rather than actually
understanding what's going on, so I won't go over it again.
<warning: bit of a ramble ahead>
When I was at uni, the CS dept had Sun servers and labtam dumb
X-terminals. That was for staff and students. The only time
we ever used a PC was for one subject on assembler where we tested/
ran our programs on a PC box cos it wasn't the end of the world
if we rooted the machine. The maths dept had a Pyramid and labs
of wyse type consoles. Dunno about physics/chem/etc. The only other
mob to have computers were the library which had macs for people
to use to write assignments on.
This was about the time my dad bought a brand new 286 (with the
optional 16 MHz CPU), it came with DOS but he got a copy of minix
and we played with that, I was amazed to see it work and this PC
look like a "real" computer.
Dave.
