It wouldn't be that bad if when you changed it, the filesystem detected it
was a link, and made a new copy for the changes to be made in.
Perhaps that is the difference between the MS approach and symlinks...
They are still logically seperate, but use the same filespace to hold it
while they are the same...
Just guessing here though, since for them to force symlinking on you and not
allow you to have seperate files would be an instant disaster.
