Without getting into a holy war lets look at the similarities.
1. Both are free unixes
2. Both are fast, stable etc
3. Both run everything you could want as a server
Differences
1. FreeBSD is faster/more reliable on Intel boxes. David Filo founder
of Yahoo just said if he was starting again he again would use FreeBSD
2. *BSD are unix as it was based the original AT & T code then
extensively modified by the Berkeley
Linux is not unix as it has none of the original AT & T code.
3. The BSD movement broke into several competing fractions.
BSDI - Full commercial unix
FreeBSD - Fastest and most reliable free unix on Intel boxes
NetBSD - BSD type unix on multiple platforms Intel, 68000,etc
OpenBSD - Most secure unix freely available
Though there is currently movement to consolidate all the various BSD
back into a single source tree.
There are differences with some init scripts BSD type and System V.
Linux look more like System V but has some BSD type scripts.
My advised is to grab a copy and play with it. It looks good on a CV if
you have expreience with a variety of unixes.
