Haven't used it much but apart from being yet another Unix (with things in
different places :) the big difference lies in the license.
There are several versions of BSD, with different licenses.
FreeBSD is probably the one you are thinking of, and AFAIK is only available
for the Intel platform.
It has a close group of (mostly Californian) developers, rather unlike the
enormous world wide Linux developer base.

Have a look at http://www.opensource.org and the section on open source
licenses.
The BSD license allows project forking whereas the GPL helps prevent it.
Forking, however, is a commercial necessity for some.

These days, FreeBSD can run Intel-based Linux binaries and vice-versa.
