I presume you mean that you don't want the ftp user to peruse the same root
directories, etc that a normal authenticated user does? [even though they
have entered a legit login & password]
I can ftp into the solaris boxen here and the default directory is my home
directory. I can then cd anywhere that my normal login can do (which I
presume you don't want to allow?)
However if I ftp anonymously, I can't cd round the place (I presume this is
what you want).
There is a lot of help and sample setups in man ftpd for Solaris 7, which
you probably have looked at...
The things you have to alter are /etc/shells (possibly), /etc/passwd and you
need to setup the ftp home directories according to the man pages. It's a
bit fiddly but it seems to work (here, at least).
I'm not sure that that will entirely solve your problem, though, as the
directory becomes common.
Another possibility is to have a set of users who only use ftp, and their
shell field in /etc/passwd would have to be altered to accommodate that.
