To whom it may concern,
I am extremely frustrated at not being able to purchase a Dell notebook
with Linux (or without an operating system) in Australia or Hong Kong
(where I frequent). (I have been informed in both countries that no Dell
notebooks are available with Linux preloaded, due to "support" issues
and/or "contractural agreements".)
I have always been impressed with Dell hardware, and Dell went up in my
estimation with their press release stating that you could now get
notebooks preloaded with Linux.
I have the money to buy, selected my model via the web site (Inspiron
7500, 15" XGA, 64MB RAM, 700MHz PIII), and confirmed that I could order
with Linux preloaded (in the _US_) at:
http://www.dell.com/us/en/bsd/topics/segtopic_linux_001_linux_center.htm?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&target=xpress.
and
http://www.dell.com/us/en/bsd/topics/linux_linuxhome.htm
When I was told that I could not get a Linux notebook in Australia or Hong
Kong, I was really let down.
I am very unimpressed that I would have to fly to America in order to get
what I need - an Inspiron running Linux (or supplied with no operating
system).
I would like a good explanation why this ludicrous situation exists. Give
me the notebook, and I'll install the OS _myself_, or fly me to the US,
and I'll pick it up. If you're going to really support Linux, please do it
properly, and don't treat Australia and _my_ needs as second-rate.
I am now seriously considering getting an IBM ThinkPad as a result.
Although IBM also does not seem to be in a position to help people who use
Linux (on a notebook) on a day-to-day basis like myself, I have a contact
inside IBM who is looking into things for me and who has been so far
been helpful.
BTW, I also tried sending this via the Customer Service Request Form but
submission failed due to a web server error. Several times pages also
timed out for delivery. Windows 2000 IIS problems??!
