IMAP is how I've done it in the past.
Only disadvantage is you tend to lose the date received, as it will be
updated with the date you upload the messages.
My advice is to leave everything in IMAP accounts.
I chop and change mail clients like the weather. I even have a web based
IMAP server (OCS).
It's great to be able to chop and change clients.
I'm waiting for the day when LDAP becomes a standard way of sharing an
address book, then the picture will be complete.
