As a very happily installed BPA user I can provide some insight :)
a) Always let your mates come out with their Linux lappy and and go
download crazy
b) Use aarnet - it's fast even if thre is a cap on the unlimited plan
(which drives me nuts)
c) Make sure you do have a windows machien handy. It's OK if you already
have a NIC in there. The guy just gave us the one he'd brought out.
There's a sofwtare install and the tech has to ring Telstra and activate
the modem and so on. Becaise the initial login and password reset is
done using the Windows client this is a fairly essentuial thing.
d) When the tech goes, download BPALogin onto your Linux box from from
http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/bpalogin/ then plug the cable into the
back of your box . It comes with a DDNS auto-update for bpa-users.org so
grab yourself a 3rd level domain name while you're at it. I used the RPM
which came with a handy init script.
There ya go! I've got a nice little gateway (ObjUptime: 45days) sitting
in the corner happily routing packets, DNS, caching and running a
webserver. I haven't played with IPChains enough yet (I don't yet grok
it) to make things zing.
Apart from the bandwidth cap, she's a little ripper.
