Do you understand every piece of software running on your machine right now?

I certainly don't (in particular X related things).

Each distribution has particular "domain experts" who understand things
and co-ordinate amongst the others packagers. For Debian, for example,
it just so happens that those people are publically known.

No one can understand everything. I don't think anyone even has the time.

PS: Russel, could not strip away the attribution when you respond. Also your
mailer doesn't seem to be conforming to the mail standards (it appears
to not copy In-Reply-To: correctly).
