Hell no - you're not nuts!
It's kinda like a trackball; it takes a bit to get used to, and everyone
will give you grief over it. "You use a what?!?"
Very comfy though. You were right on the method for dragging. The stylus
(we don't use pens on tablets, they get dirty!) would usually have a couple
of buttons on the side, so you can even have right and middle-button love in
Unix.
Make sure you get one with good pressure sensitivity for INCREDIBLE GIMPing
(I've only used these in PS, but I'm sure GIMP supports many varied effects
with tablets too), plus you might want to research ones with support for
tilt. They're really cool. The more you tilt your stylus, the more you can
lend a certain effect to your stroke.
It really gives a whole new feeling to your human-computer interface (to put
it rather impersonally).
Heaps of fun, and after getting used to it, you may just find it more
comfortable than those idiotic bricks we use day-in day-out.
