Simon,

please keep us informed of Mr Carmody's technological explorations.
(Interesting how two individuals, viz. Fels and Carmody, have taken
the opportunity to 'lift their profiles')

I didn't provide any online information being deeply suspicious, but
am very curious about developments in this area.

Such a 'public key infrastructure' set up by the ATO is very interesting.
It could be of enormous benefit, but what would be the privacy
concerns? I wonder if they have thought this through.

Or will it be a very private, public key infrastructure :)

If there was a Windows only client, would the taxation ombudsman
be appropriate? Or is this, like the banking ombudsman, only for
people suffering direct material loss?

On a similar vein: accounting software. Almost forced against my
nature to 'upgrade' my accounting software. I tried MYOB.
Couldn't get it working under Wine, but it may be something
I'm missing. (I had Quickbooks and I must say MYOB is better
for one important reason: it outputs / inputs foreign formats
like csv.)

Looking at gnucash, which is very good, but doesn't have direct
support for GST. It seems it might be possible to create
tax based accounts, and 'split' transactions between these
accounts and normal income / expense accounts.

Anyone using either gnucash or other packages this way and willing
to share how they created accounts?

<OT rant>
I've always thought it a pity we live in a secular state, when
there are such wonderful sounding Gods as Lakshmi, the goddess of cash,
whose image adorns many an Indian bank.

We might have a better perspective if we could worship
the goddess of cash instead of cash itself.

Jamie
