another text browser that everyone forgets is emacs' w3. comes by
default with xemacs, separate download for emacs.

does images in xemacs in X, else is completely text.

does lots of tricky things, like:

converting files like "bullet.gif" into a normal bullet (`*' or
 something) character.

actually uses all those <meta> tags: you can send an email to the
page author with a single key, M-space will follow <link rel=next>,
<link rel=home|next|up|etc> get added to the button bar.

generates a latex file to do printing.

passes java applets off to an external applet viewer.

(optionally) doesn't display images less than a certain size,
 replacing them with alt text.

optionally supports frames, renders while downloading, supports
stylesheets, conditionally accepting cookies and other usual browser
 features.

 etc.

its interesting to see what browsers can be once they stop trying to
be like each other.
