So the poster should set where they want replies to go; after all they know
best. I set my replies to go to lists (when I'm subscribed to them) or
where I believe it is appropriate.

Some mail user agents (MUAs), like mutt, provide a "reply to list" function.
It is slightly borked but it does the job. Pester the author of your mail
client to add something in.
