A common syndrome that goes beyond banking. In my day job implementing
B2B e-commerce, as soon as someone like Ariba find we are doing
all of our development work on Linux, they cop out and say
"We don't support Unix"
This is direct fallout of the Windows monopoly on the desktop.
Apparently ill-informed IT depts assume that not only the desktop
is owned by MS, but all back-end development is done on Windows
servers, which of course is extremely laughable.
The problem lies in confusing the platform with the application.
Footnote: we've developed multi-protocol B2B solutions with a few
man-weeks of effort, using totally open source componentry on Linux,
at about 1/100th the 'retail cost' for the equivalent B2B 'plugins'
provided by vendors like Oracle and SAP. Interesting to say the least.
Oh .. and the most workable systems we've come up with work best,
amazingly enough, work best when the underlying protocols are open and
non-proprietary. Imagine that.
