Sorry for not quoting, it's just a pain from the digests. There were some bugs in pretty recent squid versions. The presense of one extra semicolon in the source code resulted in a) it couldn't dispose of 'expired' objects b) it hogged a lot of CPU trying to delete the expired objects constantly.
