I've set up Linux here for a dialin for MS clients. Works just great (much
better than NT4.0's RRAS for anyone who didn't know that already). mgetty
is definitely the beast to use and the Modem HOWTO is a great source for
information.
It's also quite easy (recompile mgetty) to set up AutoPPP to recognise a PPP
connection straight up rather than requiring a login script.
