Depending on which version of Slackware you're using, you may wish to try
my mgetty package. I created this for the 3.X series (2.0.3X kernel) to
used a Cyclades multiport card, though it is easy to reconfigure to use any
standard serial port. All it needs is "installpkg mgetty.tgz" (plus a few
tweaks to suit your system).
