I've removed the In-Reply-To header, as this may warrant a discussion
outside the context of the computer donations thread.

This has come up a number of times with the current committee - I'm sure it
has been considered in the past. It really comes down to cost, and whether
we would get a lot of use out of a place such as this.
A prime factor in both of those considerations is space. Big places cost
lots, and SLUG isn't getting any smaller. Our activities are usually largish
(or require a fair bit of room), and again, I can't see us using less space
(of course, to solve that we could all have club iPaqs - just a thought)...

Another thought - Conrad brought up the idea of a taskforce to work against
"dumbarse" decisions by commercial and government entities (ie. Internet
banking idiocy, the ATO's new [ab]use of PKI) and raise awareness of issues
in the wider community. I guess you could call it a "grassroots lobby group"
if you were into those kinds of definitions. A meeting place to assist
projects such as this would be good.

Again, cost. To do this would require a little more expenditure than we're
currently up for. One option is the sponsorship of a location. This is a
dangerous path, and I'm sure many of you would agree that SLUG's
independence is a good thing. Not something to simply disregard, however.
Thanks for bringing this up on the list, Ken. I hope some great ideas come
out of it - I think a permanent SLUG 'place' would be very, very cool.
