Only when playing with broken SQL queries in PostgreSQL or text processing
with PHP cgi. ;)

The only way to find out is to see what's running. Sounds as if something's
grinding your machine's CPU and swap. This is one reason why I use
Bubblemon... At a glance you can see how your machine is doing, and what's
changing. Kick off a broken query and you see the CPU boiling, then your RAM
filling up *really* quick. :) It just goves you a bit of warning so you can
get out before meltdown.

Ctrl-Alt-Backspace not working?

Is the machine network accessible? SSH in, top it first to see what's going
on, and then kill off whatever's causing the trouble.

If you can't SSH in, you've managed to kick it's arse. :)
