Bad news

I noticed when I run minicom I can hear it take the phone off the hook
and then gets lost somewhere and doesn't hang up the phone properly.

By the time I type in the AT command I can not hear any thing and when I hit
enter
it comes back with NO CARRIER virtually straight away.

any futher thoughts
