Just to update folks, I got Multilink PPP running. Contrary to what
Jeff said, it was damn easy and works boodifully.
For the uninitiated, Multilink PPP is a way of bundling together
multiple serial links, like modems, into one single PPP connection.
It's like the Linux EQL module only is a standard so it's supported by
lots of hardware as used at ISPs. It's also a bit more robust and
easier to set up than EQL.
We're running it over two modems at the moment and you can remove either
modem and the link keeps going. With the "persist" flag set when you
turn on one of the modems, the link comes back up.
To get it to work I had to compile it in (listed experimental) to the
kernel. It's only in later 2.3 series kernels although there's a patch
against 2.2.14. I got it going on 2.4.0-test5. You also need to use
PPPd 2.4.0. I'm running this on a Debian stable machine with the ppp
2.4.0 package grabbed from unstable.
All you need to do (in Debian anyway) is have the option "multilink" set
in your first /etc/ppp/peers/peername file and "multilink" and "noip" in
any subsequent links.
