I have done this using CU and setting up /etc/uucp/* files
Mine works great even my Email2SMS script works but Optus doesn't support it
via Vodaphone dial up number. Telstra works OK for me though.

Subject: [SLUG] SMS messaging Solutions?
Sluggers,
I'm setting up an SMS messaging server, and I was looking for some
advice/experienced comment on the best way to go about it.
I've successfully created a simple shell that dials the modem
and runs a chat script to connect to a text interface at Telstra
and successfully send a message. However the only command that I
know about to run the chat script is pppd, which seems a bit
crude.
I tried Minicom with the -S script option but it didn't like the
syntax of my script and the man page didn't give an example.
any advice?
Thanks
Pete
