Due to an internal transfer in our Melbourne office, we have a position that is being relocated to Sydney. It could loosely be classed as an "operator" position, and whilst not specifically Linux-based, would provide a good stepping stone into employment within the IT industry, and the opportunity to learn about comms, firewalls, VPNs, WANs, etc. I will have a more "formal" PD for this next week, but the basic position will involve; * Checking daily backups around the country * Checking virus signature files are up to date * Taking charge of the backups for our network in Sydney (approx. 20 x NT, 2 x Netware and 4 x *nix boxes) (i.e. tape changes and rotations) * Assisting the Network Engineer (i.e. ME !!) with patching, configuring routers, switches and hubs, and maybe some PABX work (patching, etc) * Building, configuring and (sometimes) destroying servers !! * Creation of user accounts on the NT and Citrix Metaframe servers. There are good opportunities to learn Unix (HP/UX, AIX, and possibly BSD/Linux if a few projects get the nod), NT (both 4.0 and 2000), Netware, comms (Cisco 6000, 1601, frame relay, etc). In short, it's an entry-level position, but would at least enable you to get a foot in the door. Living in reasonable proximity to the CBD would be a plus (I live over an hour drive away). To save clogging the list, email me privately and I'll put you on the list for more details as they come to hand. Salary being offered is, I admit, not brilliant at $35k max, plus superannuation, but it's not a real bad start.
