No patched my ppp as per instruction (linmodem howto), but I don't think the
document I had refer to anything about patching tty.h. Iam using RH 6.2,
kernel  2.2.16-3

No when I followed Linmodem howto, it worked perfectly, no kernel panic. I
had to down the linux box because at the moment I don't need it running
during the day, when I brought it up again the problems started.

no got rid of everything I changed, including ltmodem driver and put
original ppp.o file back from archive. even got rid of ppp0 entry using
linuxconf and recreated a new one but still problem arises.
