? it should work fine. try:
(copied from two pieces of /etc/magicfilter/ljet4l-filter)
dvips -D 300 -R -q -f <file.dvi | gs -q -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -r300 \
-sDEVICE=ljet4 -sOutputFile=- - -c quit
and dump stdout to /dev/lp0 (or whereever)
