I've use mgetty on many sites using many RH 6.X's never had a problem.
just some suggestions
You don't have a motherboard with IRDA setup on com2 perhaps?
permissions OK on /dev/ttyS2 (I've never had to set them)
/dev/ttyS0 OK?
just execute from the prompt,
mgetty -D -x9 ttyS0
