no. the mtu of the ethernet interface should stay at 1500.
the mtu and mru of the *ppp* interface should be 1492.
ie: give the "mru 1492 mtu 1492" options to pppd.
if it still doesn't work, give the "debug" pppd option. seeing the ppp
handshake is very useful.
