I dont really know the problem here but i may be able to put u on 
track.

I once built me self a linux distro from scratch i had the kernel and 
basic programs like netutils bash gzip tar vi and a few others i also 
had shutdown etc. the same message "u dont exist" occoured when the 
passwd file was not set up.. well the passwd file was set up but the 
library that passed the info to it was not.

I thimk u will find if i remember correctly that the NSS library (the 
Name Server Switch).  was the reason  so mabey your NSS lib is 
crashing or not running properly. try updating it..

anyway this may help or it may jog someones memory..

oh btw instead of reset if u have magic sysreq compiled into your 
kernel do a alt-prtscr S U B   
Sync Unmount Boot
