Actually got it going in the end. Had two main problems. Kernel
was adding in a route for the local lan down the ipsec interface which I
had to manually remove. And I simplified my setup a bit to try and get
it going.

I intend to use poptop to allow windows machines to connect, but
I don't like it for a linux-linux VPN solution mainly because the linux
client isn't all that great.
