My only concern is, we will see Linux wars like in the late 80's early 90's
Unix wars era? ie: 'Propriety ship-ness', yes, a blur of the GPL, and other
open licences ... again?
Would this result as to where open source is going??? Is open source
devel/prods an easy stepping stone for big-time companies to 'diversify'
it/them for their own sorta 'GPL-ed interests'?
Hmmm.... we will see "CP/M become the MS-DOSs" we've seen in the past???

They can take the existing code and release it themselves, or bash on
bugs until it's ready.

If they can't afford to do the development themselves, they can't
afford to be in the software development business. Having people do
stuff for them "for free" should be seen as a nice bonus, not
something guaranteed.
