This is documented both on the lists webpage, and in the FAQ:

    4. Argh! What's this about a password?
       The new mailing list software uses passwords to make sure that you
       are you, and your prankster best friend who thinks that
       unsubscribing you would be funny, is not.
       You can retrieve your password using the Mailman [25]web
       interface. In the "Slug Subscribers" section, type in your email
       address and hit the "Edit Options" button; you will be able to
       retrieve it there. You can't do this via email.
