Do a make clean again.
Copy the /usr/src/linux-2.2.16/configs/kernelXXXXX config template to
/usr/src/linux-2.4.blah/.config
This give you all the setting of the RedHat config. Next, there will be
alot of new features in the new kernel right?, do a make oldconfig. This
will basically take that old config and ask you to answer the NEW questions
and generate a .config for 2.4. Then do a make

Yes they do. They take the 2.2.16 kernel and apply over 100 patches. (they
backported the USB from 2.4), that gives you the 2.2.16-XX. I'm not sure
that many are performance patches though, they are mostly compatability or
driver support.

BTW if you are building a new kernel from your 2.2.16-22 and want to dual
boot the different versions of 2.2.16, you should edit the Makefile and
change the -22 to -SC for example. This ensures the /lib/modules directory
of your new kernel won;t get mixed up with the 2.2.16-22 of RedHat's
