You more than likley havn't setup your kernel correctly...

One thing that stuffed me up was that I needed to enable udma for my hard disk 
controller, otherwise I would get 3mb/s (hdparam -t /dev/hda) but with it 
enabled for my specific chipset I get at 26mb/s which makes things alot 
faster...

I would be guessing you have done something simular, and as I'm not at my home 
computer I can't tell you the exact settings, but you'll see if it if you look 
for it.

I'll tell you the exact option when i get home...
