thats pretty much what I have got, configuration-wise

I did add the "AuthPAMConfig ftp" to the proftpd.conf file but to no avail.

Seems like it is PAM that is the problem, how do I get some
feedback/debugging
info from PAM?

I have added debug to the end of all the lines in pam.d/ftp but there is
still
no extra output in the logs.
