MP3 = "MPEG-1 Layer III"
so if what you say about only MPEG-2 being able to handle up to
5 main audio channels, MP3s won't be able to do it. which kinda
makes sense, since no decoder/encoder i know of will handle 3+
channels. any additions to MP3s to allow this will almost
definitely be non-standard.
there's a free GPL MPEG-2 encoder at
http://members.dingoblue.net.au/~mikecheng/ called TooLame, but
i dunno if that encodes 3+ channels either.
(okay, i'm curious now -- why 3 channels? i guess it's not
because you have hot/cold/inverted signal lines coming from a
mic ... :)
