What exactly are you after?
as in minimal install on the 486, with apps running on your office
machine?

its just a matter of editing /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess and
/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config
(on the host machine... aka office machine)
then run xdm (you can use gdm, but vanilla is a nicer flavour)

then on the 486 you run

X -query <my host>

where <my host> is your hosts ip/fqdn

you can also get X to broadcast for available hosts but anyway

the XF86Config file will need to be configured on the 486
and a suitable user account and its ~/.xinitrc will have to
be configured on the host computer.

its really pretty simple.
