Try (as root) running the command "lspci".
With any luck, it'll report a line like:
"00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1370 [AudioPCI] (rev 01)"
If not, it's unlikely that you've got a PCI soundcard, which means you
either don't have one, or you have a nasty old ISA/EISA card. Those can
be a real pain to setup, and if you do have one of those hopefully
someone else will be able to help you. Try "modprobe sb" and cross your
fingers, maybe? (many soundcards are "soundblaster-compatible" to some
degree)
But, if you do see a "Multimedia audio controller", you should now have
the make and model of your soundcard. I'm not sure of the best way to
go from there on a Mandrake system (I use Debian), but google.com should
be able to help you (try searching for "mandrake linux sound <make &
model>"). Otherwise, ask the list again :)
In my case, it was simply a case of getting the kernel module "es1370"
to load when I boot up, by putting it in my /etc/modules file.
